Tea (Camellia sinensis) Production, Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Prospects in Ethiopia

Tea is one of the most commonly consumed stimulants in world. It cultivated commercially at Wushwush, Gumero, and Chewaka tea estate plantations, Ethiopia. Over 150,000 hectares Ethiopian land are available for production high-quality tea, but only 3,099 currently under cultivation. In Ethiopia, clones Mlk-1, Mlk-2, 11/56, S-15/10, FNF, 11/4, 6/8, L6, B9, Chai, BB-35, SR-18 grown. Ethiopia’s favorable environmental conditions increased availability throughout year, a sufficient labor force significant opportunity companies. However, still infant because it needs huge capital to establish plantations production, pest problems, limitations improved technologies like cultivars, lack genetic resources. Besides, there limitation comprehensive research develop innovative case agronomic, breeding, management conditions. Thus, government should invite investors facilitate necessary things increase industry country. The be strengthened development implementation appropriate technologies.
